"Ignorance of the scriptures is ignorance of Christ."
From a reading from the prologue of the commentaries of St.Jerome on the prophet Isaiah, N 1.2
EXPECT RESULTS: Matthew 4:19. Jesus promises that if we but step out in faith we will reap fruits. But we have to make an act of faith.
NOT ALONE: Acts 1:8. The Holy Spirit will
be with you. It is He who will empower you to be God's witness.
Reading the Bible is essential part of our Christian life. It is an important way through which, as individuals and as a community, we get to know God and the person of Jesus Christ. Study of His words and actions helps to deepen our relationship with our loving Saviour. Through reflecting on His words we can also learn much about how to reach out to others with God's mercy and love.
What follows are a selection of Bible references for you to reflect on and pray with, which have something to say to us about our Christian calling to be evangelisers.
LOVE: Matthew 22:37-40: These mark the core values of mission. Without love, all our efforts are in vain.
MERCY: Luke 15: 4-7.What a healing and liberating experience it is to know that if we are truly sorry for our sins and ask God for forgiveness, we will receive his mercy. How many people do we know burdened with guilt who need to hear this Good News?
CALLED: Matthew 4: 18-22. Each one of us has been called to follow Jesus as did the first disciples and to bear fruit.
COMMISSIONED: Mark 16:15. Jesus has commissioned each one of us to proclaim the Kingdom of God.
THE MESSAGE: 1 Corinthians 15: 1-4. What we believe is centred in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
THE LOST: Luke 19:10. We must seek out the lost whether they be lost spiritually, physically or mentally.
ADAPTATION: 1 Corinthians 9:22. Motivated by love, we must try to meet people where they are at in an attempt to witness to them about Christ.
